Avalon Airport rolls out new Hidden Disability Support Program

Avalon Airport is proud to announce the launch of its Hidden Disability Initiative.  The initiative will provide enhanced support for passengers with hidden disabilities, offering them a smoother and more inclusive experience as they travel through the airport. This initiative, marked by the internationally recognised Sunflower symbol, will ensure that travellers with conditions such as autism, anxiety, dementia, and other hidden disabilities can access discreet and tailored assistance throughout their journey.

In a move that signals a shift toward a more inclusive and compassionate approach to air travel, Melbourne Avalon Airport will offer free Sunflower Lanyards to travellers. The globally recognised Sunflower Lanyard is a silent signal to airport staff, allowing them to provide tailored assistance to passengers who need it, from check-in to boarding and throughout their time at the airport.

Ari Suss, Acting CEO of Avalon Airport, said, “We are committed to providing a welcoming and stress-free environment for all travellers. The Hidden Disability Initiative is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to support passengers with invisible disabilities. By offering the Sunflower Lanyard, we hope to alleviate some of the stress these passengers face, making their journey through the airport more comfortable.”

Travel can be overwhelming for anyone, but for individuals with hidden disabilities, the stress can be even greater. Whether it’s navigating crowded terminals, dealing with the noise of security procedures, or managing anxiety around flights, these challenges can make air travel seem impossible. The launch of Avalon Airport’s Hidden Disability Initiative marks a powerful moment in the ongoing fight for greater accessibility and equity in public spaces.

Sandee Facy from Hidden Disabilities, commented, “We are delighted to see Avalon Airport embracing the Hidden Disability Sunflower Program. This initiative not only promotes awareness but also empowers individuals with hidden disabilities to travel with confidence, knowing that they have the support they need. It’s a crucial step towards making travel accessible to everyone, regardless of the challenges they face.”

About the Hidden Disability Sunflower Program

The Sunflower Lanyard was originally launched in the UK and has since expanded globally. The initiative is designed to support individuals who may experience additional challenges while travelling, such as those with autism, anxiety, cognitive impairments, or dementia. The distinctive sunflower lanyard acts as a silent signal to staff, allowing them to provide the right level of assistance and ensuring a smoother, more comfortable journey for the wearer.

Avalon Airport’s Hidden Disability Initiative is part of the airport’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and enhancing the travel experience for all. The program aligns with Avalon’s mission to become a leader in passenger care, ensuring that all travellers can navigate the airport with dignity, respect, and support.
