Meet Maverick, the new pawsome team member at Avalon Airport Melbourne.
Instead of directing air traffic, or resolving ticket enquiries, his job description involves receiving
pats, wagging tails, and offering snuggles.
As a furry airport ambassador, Maverick’s introduction to Avalon Airport Melbourne is part of a
wider initiative to transform the travel journey into a more joyful and welcoming experience.
According to Australian Aviation, one in three Aussies experience aviophobia, also known as a
fear of flying. Navigating strict boarding times, customs and the security process means that
the airport experience can be a nerve wrecking aspect of travelling. However, Avalon Airport
Melbourne believes that it doesn’t have to be this way. Visitors can see the four-legged staff
member around the terminals ready to greet passengers and meet families.
Aside from soothing jittery flyers, therapy dogs such as Maverick are also found to be supportive
for people with invisible disabilities. In Australia, 4.4 million people live with a disability, and it is
estimated that 80% of these individuals have an invisible disability, such as mental health
conditions. Therapy dogs are found to be able to support individuals struggling with mental
health by helping to reduce anxiety through tactile stimulation, and nudging them to bring them
back to the present.
This initiative goes paw-in-paw with Avalon Airport Melbourne’s pre-existing Hidden
Disabilities Sunflower Program, which aims to ensure that the travel experience is inclusive for
everyone.
Dave Moreland, Chief Operating Officer at Avalon Airport Melbourne, said the airport wanted
to create an experience that people would remember for all the right reasons.

you’re flying for the first time, travelling with young children or simply feeling
anxious before a flight, even a small positive interaction can make a real

Tasked to make flying a smoother experience, Maverick’s presence is sure to spread smiles on
passenger’s faces before they’ve even reached their destination.
