For some, “budget travel” might sound like a paradox. When you’re flying to a new or familiar destination, flights are the one unavoidable cost that may deter people from taking a vacation or visiting family and friends. That’s why we’re sharing our insider tips for getting the best, most budget-friendly experience out of your local airport. With a little advance planning and internet know-how, you’ll never let your budget stop you from taking that well-earned break again.
Book in advance
As it gets closer to your travel date, the price of flights will inevitably climb higher due to a few factors such as availability and demand. That’s why we recommend booking domestic flights at least one month before you travel, and international flights three to six months beforehand. Spending the money earlier will also help you save in the long run; after all, the early bird gets the worm!
Take your travel dates and season into consideration
Next, when searching your travel dates, check if your trip is set to fall during peak or off-season. Shoulder seasons like spring and autumn are generally much cheaper than summer and winter, especially during school holidays. A bit of research into the off-season of your destination could save you big bucks.
Think about how you travel to the airport
How do you get to the airport? If you’re travelling on a budget, you might like to consider public transport. Not only is it convenient and comfortable, but it’s also almost always cheaper than taking a taxi or Uber. Avalon has links to Melbourne with Skybus and Geelong through MyBus, which both offer excellent prices. Our destination airports also have great public transport, like the Airport Link from Sydney Airport that’ll have you in the city in no time.
‘Weigh’ up your need for luggage
Unlike most international tickets, many domestic airlines will require extra fees for checked bags and cheaper options for carry-on only. Consider whether or not you really need that extra suitcase, and strike the balance between necessity and want, especially for longer trips.
Fly from a regional airport like Avalon
Commercial airports are well-known to be overcrowded, susceptible to long delays and cancellations, and can be a nightmare to travel to during peak hours. It can also be more expensive, with parking and even some extra fees on fares. Where possible, consider flying out from a regional airport like Avalon, which offers great destinations – Sydney, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast – and is the gateway to the Surf Coast.
It’s no secret that airline travel can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Travel broadens the mind and connects you with the important people in your life and we all want more of this after being grounded by COVID-19. That’s why we’re sharing our insider tips to get you in the air more often!
We hope to see you at Avalon Airport for the travel that suits your budget soon. In the meantime, explore our destinations and start planning for your next trip.
